Trout in The Classroom
Each year, our after school students participate in the Trout in the Classroom program here at the Y. They raise the trout from eggs to fingerlings, then release the fish into the Big Wood River. Through this program, students gain a first-hand understanding of the trout life cycle, river health, and how to be good stewards to our environment.
From January through April, Trout in the Classroom allows our students to raise Rainbow Trout from hatchery-provided eggs. Our students care for the fish during the amazing transformation from eggs, to alevin, to fingerlings until they are big enough to be released into the Big Wood River.
Rainbow Trout are extremely temperamental to their environment, as are many native fish species in our rivers. This program fosters a deeper understanding of water quality and chemistry, river health, and the nitrogen cycle in tandem with raising Rainbow Trout that will eventually live in a wild river. Through Trout in the Classroom, students get hands-on practice at being good stewards of their environment for the other creatures we share it with.
How can I participate?
Students in the Y’s After School Club, Nature Explorer Camp, and other programs all participate in Bonni’s Garden Activities, including Trout in the Classroom.
