What is an annual giving campaign?

  • An opportunity to increase the well-being of mankind by providing philanthropic funds to expand the reach and impact of the YMCA
  • The giving of time, talent and treasure for someone else
  • Voluntary action for the common good
  • The time to share the YMCA stories (clear, credible and concise) and the impact they have on how the YMCA strengthens the foundations of our community
  • The impact includes:
    • Youth Development – the YMCA focuses on developing the potential of every child and teen
    • Healthy Living – the YMCA focuses on improving the nation’s health and well-being
    • Social Responsibility – the YMCA gives back and provides support to our neighbors

Who participates?

  • Board participation – make a gift at a meaningful level along with participation on a team
  • Staff participation – make a gift at a meaningful level, full-time staff participate as a team co-captain; part time staff are encouraged to participate on a team and all staff should understand their roles in building philanthropy by engaging and involving members and donors at a deeper level
  • Team Captains and Team Members – staff, members, program members and community members make a meaningful gift and contact other YMCA friends and family along with outside contacts for  their meaningful gift by sharing the YMCA story

How does the campaign work?

  • It is scheduled annually with a specific start and finish
  • It is volunteer led and accomplished, with staff direction
  • First a campaign for people – YOU;  then a campaign for funds
  • Tell the YMCA story and encourage pledging – “5 for 5” – secure five pledges over 5 weeks
  • Collectively, we will secure a total of 500 gifts raising $130,000 in contributions

Why?

  • The YMCA serves over 25% of the Blaine County population
  • 16.8% of our population are persons of Hispanic or Latino origin compared to 9.6% in the State of Idaho
  • While our county has an above average income, we have a significant amount of people (32%) living below $34,999 and almost 50% living below $49,999 and 70% living below $74,999.
  • The YMCA attracts 21% of our total membership base with young adults 19-29 years of age; this population is generally underserved with healthy activity choices
  • The Open Doors Needs Based Sliding Fee scale will distribute over $500,000 in assistance in 2010
  • Nearly 60% of our members and program members receive some type of assistance
